Brightening a Narrow Windowless Kitchen

The kitchen can be either an easy room to dress up or a very challenging room. I find a large, open, natural lit with at least 1 window kitchen are the easiest to accessorize and to make look really nice. I wish to focus on the types of kitchens some of us are stuck with that are small, narrow and windowless.

When first arriving and seeing my kitchen in the apartment, I thought it was the most dreadful and sad looking kitchen. I couldn’t just put a window in (it’s an apartment) and I couldn’t expand it either. So what I thought instead was to add a splash of colour to lighten up the room. I made a little curtain to go right above the sink that was a nice bright red and white-checkered fabric to help liven up the kitchen.

All I did was made a simple pattern for the curtain and got a twistable expandable curtain rod so I could fit in in between the cupboards next to my sink. By doing this I made my kitchen look much better and a bit brighter without having to do extreme modifications to my kitchen. Something else I chose to do was find some fun small things to place on my wall.

Not so much that I was overcrowding it, just a two small items to make the wall a little more exciting for such a bland and narrow kitchen. I put up a cute sign and an old license plate to give my wall a little more of an older look. I consider that to be a simple yet effective way to dress up your room without being able to do any real renovations.

The key to accessorizing such a room is to see what you can do instead of focusing on what you can’t do. Some other ideas that you could try if you could do some renovations to your small narrow kitchen would be to repaint or replace the cabinets. For example, my kitchen is narrow and the dark brown cupboards make it look even darker. Repainting them or replacing them with a lighter brown or even a white would add light without being able to add a window or adding more lights to the room.
