Probably the biggest key feature in a bedroom is (surprise) the bed. The presentation of your bed when first walking in can make a huge difference in how nice and what kind of quality you perceive of your room when you walk in. First, is the bed made? Do you have nicely arranged pillows? Are the sheets squared away? Think about the last time you walked into a nice hotel room and about the time you stayed in a cheap place. It’s all about presentation. One should consider fabrics, colours and patterns. Are the current colours modern or are they from the last decade?
Do the colours work or are they disjointed? The bed itself – is it just a frame? Could you benefit from a new headboard (they can be made inexpensively). If you have room, a small end piece at the foot of the bed could be a nice place to put on shoes or hold luggage. Next you should probably consider the floor. Surprisingly, many people leave clothing, shoes, belts etc on the floor. Avoid the temptation to say you’ll pick it up in the morning. Make sure your floors are spotless and uncluttered. If your bedroom is not carpeted, consider adding a throw rug that meshes well with the bed. If you want to do a little more, consider purchasing higher end knobs for your dressers and closets. Line your drawers with nice paper. Replace light fixtures or fans. Replace the faceplate on the light switch. Consider getting new lampshades. Finally, if you want, paint your bedroom in a modern colour. If you need ideas, try touring homes or looking at magazines in home improvement centres.
Deciding on a scheme and palette can be tough and it might help to see others results before making decisions. Finally, tidy your closets and dressers. Visit Ikea or somewhere similar and get a solution to organize your shoes, clothes, suits, ties etc. While you’re there, find a nice storage solution for dirty clothes if you normally leave them in the bedroom/closet. Try to maximize the use of your available space. De-clutter your dresser top and other flat surfaces. IfReplace any pictures and frames with recent pictures or recent frames.
